The Best they can do... “If this is the best they can do, why bother..?” Bandolier

This is a list of papers claimed, by homeopaths, as positive evidence in favour of homeopathy. It is compiled from three lists - "An Overview of Positive Homeopathy Research and Surveys" compiled by the European Network of Homeopathy Researchers (ENHR) in April 2005, "The Research Evidence Base for Homeopathy" compiled by the Faculty of Homeopathy (Fac Hom) and "Clinical Research Evidence in Favour of Homeopathy" from the British Homeopathic Association, incorporating the Homeopathic Trust (BHA). All three lists were accessed during January and February 2011. They have been modified since but are still to be found by means of a bit of judicious googling and obviously there are many more lists around of a similar nature, not least the (very similar) list submitted to the UK parliamentary committee which looked at state funding for homeopathy. It was felt though, these three were comprehensive and representative of the type of evidence homeopaths regard as convincingly positive for the effectiveness and efficacy of homeopathy.

The three lists have been combined, duplicates removed, sorted alphabetically then sub-divided into the categories. Out of a final total of 128 references 60 were from pro-homeopathic and alternative medicine journals (so are unreliable as evidence), of the rest twenty were either non-randomised (according to the BHA), uncontrolled, inadequately blinded or were observational studies or surveys (so, again worthless as evidence for something as unlikely as homeopathy), ten were in non-English language journals, two were unrelated to clinical homeopathy, one was a book and one was an anonymous editorial. Only 34 (roughly a quarter) were from mainstream, English language journals.

In the list that follows the referencing style of the original list has been preserved, each citation is followed by an acronym indicating the original list it was sourced from and, in some cases, an internal link which directs (in a new window) to the reference in standardised format in the main RationalVetMed index where links, responses and commentaries can be found.

Bear in mind when reading that this is some of the absolute best evidence that homeopaths can come up with. It is full of references to vague and difficult to define conditions - hayfever, flatulence, "wellbeing", “subjective impressions about treatment”, “burning sensations”, mild vertigo and so forth, and set about with weaselly qualifiers like “apparent”, “may”, “could be”, “further studies are required” etc... Many of them are vague about whether or how they have been blinded, controlled or randomised and many of them are just patient satisfaction surveys - the scientific equivalent of the head waiter coming up to you in the middle of the meal and asking if everything is ok (to which the usual answer is "yes, yes, fine, now just get lost and let me get on with my meal").

None of them, despite what homeopaths would have us believe, are any sort of proof that homeopathy is effective. Read on and prepare for enlightenment...
